Why I Cannot Open a Jar of Pickles...

Updated: Sep 19

woman struggling to open a jar

Here I am, at home. It is Saturday morning. My husband is golfing. My kids are grown and gone.

And I want to make a tuna fish sandwich for lunch.

I have a can of unopened pickles in the larder and pull those out. I have some delicious mayonnaise, boiled eggs, and a great can of tuna in the bowl, all waiting. And I bought a brand new loaf of sourdough bread. Yum.

I pick up the can of pickles and turn the lid. I realize, well it’s just not as easy as it used to be to grip the jar and open them.

I am sixty-one, with no physical problems, but I am guessing something has changed here that I wasn’t aware of regarding my physical strength.

I used to grab a bag of chips or even take pride in my ability to grip and open hard-to-open things, I would grab and rip/pull it apart and feel the packaging rip apart.

But I cannot open things anymore like I used to. It hurts my hands and I just don’t have the same grip.

I keep scissors in my kitchen. I purchased a Swiss army knife for my keychain, but when it comes to a damn jar of pickles it’s just not enough.

Grip strength is an indicator of overall health; men have a higher grip strength than women. But all the same, a few years ago these pickles would not have posed a problem for me. Grip strength declines as you age.

Who else could open the pickles for me? I think about this. Nobody really, unless I bother a neighbor and admit that I cannot open them.

Forget it. I am going out to eat.
